Guys, it all has an explanation.No one ever goes in and stops the combination, because the R-3's protective Telekinesis field extends to all 3 R-Machines when they combine. This is more evident in the Divine Wars anime, in which the mechas are surrounded by a green field of energy during combination. This field is impossible to cross, or at least it's very difficult to do so, so the Variable Formation can go on undisturbed until it is complete.

I was a bit shocked to see how ridiculous that helmet was first added compare to R1 head, but after a while it wasnt so bad.
