Awesome video. Congrats on your lucky encounter. I hope you dont take what AMKundu said to heart. People are their own responsibility and are more than capable of making their own educated decisions about their lives. If they take your video as an example and try to chase down a pod of orcas without the proper safety precautions, they are setting themselves up for their own failure and should probably be banned from watching TV and Youtube with fear of endangering themselves.

@AMKundu Didn't think you were being a jerk, I just wanted you and anyone else reading your post to understand that we had safety precautions set up, more than mets the eye, in case we needed them.I'm sorry, but I don't need to set examples for "orca lovers" any more than professional wake boarders, surf boarders, kayakers in white water, parachuters, car racers etc.. need to set examples to people watching their videos with given dangers.

@AMKundu as much as your right... things are most things are boring without risk

Hey Discover Sooke, I'm not trying to be a jerk, but as a coxsain with the auxiliary - AND a rep for DiscoverSooke - you must acknowledge that you're setting an example here for inexperienced orca lovers. While I'm sure that Prince-of-Whales would quickly move in to rescue you if you tipped, as you know, any rescue also puts the rescuers at risk too. Also, a float plan and radio does not mean you'll have instant help at a mile out. Chat it up with your auxiliary pals to see what they think!

@AMKundu Except you missed the sailing plan left with Sooke Harbour Resort and Marina, the PFD's we were wearing and the hand held VHF radio, plus we had a whale watching vessel 500 feet from us and a dozen fishing vessels off Possession Pt.As a Coxswain with the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary, I will agree with you and the water temperature, but 3 minutes is a little extreme I assure you. I appreciate the heads up, however we did have backup with us.

Nice video and excellent orca encountners, but it's a bad example to be a "mile offshore" wearinng cotton jeans, shorts, Teva sandals, and a cotton sweat shirt... the water off Sooke is about 54-degrees year-round, and you'd only last three minutes if you tipped - if you tipped, it might also be the orcas that got the 'bad rap' for generating unstable wakes... get some neoprene.
